What You’ll Find In Cheshire

The needle picks up mostly the lighter ink from the upper layer. By the end of the session, the bottom of the cap (where most of the ashes settled) gets wiped clean and discarded. The actual amount of your loved one or pet that ended up in the tattoo is around 5%. The remaining 95% is in the bin. Most clients never find out.
This isn’t a moral failing on the part of generalist studios. The specialist preparation process needed to do this work properly is genuinely difficult to develop and not something that can be added to an existing practice casually. It does, however, mean that specialist work needs a specialist studio.
What’s Different About How We Do It
An ashes tattoo at Bubblegum Ink ® uses a 100% infusion of prepared ashes into a bespoke ink. Every set of ashes that comes through the studio gets processed before it ever meets the ink. The processing has three stages, all developed alongside research scientists near Macclesfield over a period of years.
Particle size reduction matches the ash particles to the ink formulation, ensuring even suspension throughout the finished pigment. Full sterilisation eliminates any biological contamination introduced during cremation, transport, or storage. Heavy metal and pharmaceutical residue removal strips out the elemental and pharmaceutical compounds that pose the greatest reaction risk if introduced to skin without preparation.
Once processed, the ashes are introduced to a custom ink formulation engineered specifically to hold the prepared particles in perfect suspension. Every line of the finished tattoo carries them through it. There’s no settling at the bottom of an ink cap because the chemistry doesn’t work that way once the ashes have been properly prepared.
