About Paul Cutler, Founder of Bubblegum Ink ®
Bubblegum Ink ® is the work of one person: Paul Cutler, a tattoo artist who has spent the best part of three decades getting one thing right. Today he runs a private, appointment only studio in Sandbach, Cheshire, recognised across the UK as a specialist in cremation ashes tattoos. The road to that took him from body piercing, through tattooing on the coast of southern Spain, to the studio he runs now.
How Paul Got Here
Paul began in body piercing, spending years learning the discipline and care that working close to people’s skin demands. From there he moved into tattooing, and for a spell worked on the coast of Andalucía in southern Spain, building the range and confidence that only comes from tattooing day in, day out for a steady stream of clients.
He came back to settle in Congleton, Cheshire, and it was there that ashes tattoos went from something he did occasionally to the work he is now known for. As more people came to him specifically to have a loved one or a pet carried in their skin, it became clear this deserved to be a specialism in its own right rather than a sideline. That realisation is what led to the dedicated private studio he has worked from ever since, now based in nearby Sandbach.
Why Ashes Tattoos Became the Focus
An ashes tattoo is not a normal tattoo, and Paul treats it as its own craft. Cremation ashes have to be properly prepared before they are anywhere near safe to put into skin, and working that out, and doing it consistently, takes dedicated experience that a general tattooist simply does not accumulate. Over the years Paul refined a way of preparing ashes, matching them to the right particle size, cleaning and sterilising them and removing the contaminants that raw ashes carry, so the finished tattoo heals exactly like any other. Paul is a multiple award-winning artist, with awards won at tattoo events including in the United States.
